Mansel Lacy Soap Box Derby 2010

Monday, June 7th, 2010

The 2010 Mansel Lacy Soap Box Derby was very successful with 29 entrants although 2 teams withdrew at the last minute. The weather was very kind this year. Plenty of warm sunshine and no rain

The track was fast with two teams breaking the old course record by a massive 2 seconds.  C12 won the Senior race by a few hundredths of a second in a time of 1min .0223 seconds. Team Treasure were second with a time of 1min .0267 seconds.

C12 was steered by Steve Thomas from Chippenham, Wiltshire who is no stranger to the track. Since last year he has produced  streamlining to his cart to the nth degree. The sleekest model by far.

Team Treasure had bought Ian Astley’s record breaking soap box from last year This Soap Box had held the course record of
1 minute 4 seconds for a number of years. Gynfor Benjamin of Team Treasure managed to squeeze some more speed out of their new soap box.

The junior race was won by FWW3 from Eastnor with a fast time of 1.06mins, closely followed by DTGwynneSpeed, a new team from Mansel Lacy – ‘Lacer 1′ came a creditable 3rd driven by young Jack Grice and Ben Jones.

The best turned out crew was Mazdapiece, who built their cart from an aluminium ladder as the frame , then added the nosecone from a canoe, fairing from a motorbike and side pieces from the rear aerofoil of a racing cart. they also brought with them a massive support group of people.

The most innovative design of a Soap Box trophy went to Grasshopper from Yarpole
